The good news is that a flat tire need not mean you have to buy new tires. You may be able to schedule a patch & repair service. The bad news is this does not apply to all flats. The puncture cannot be more than 1/4-inch in diameter, and it must be in the area of the tire's central treads. If it is larger or occurs in the sidewall or shoulder, the tire must be replaced, not repaired. Another factor is the condition of the tire, to begin with. If the tread has been worn down to a depth of 2/32-inch in any area of the tread, or the wear indicator is showing, patching the tire would be a dangerous proposition. However, if it is repairable, the job must be done immediately in order to stem the long-term damage that starts at the time of puncture. And above all, you must be careful to whom you entrust the job.
