Compare the 2019 Honda Civic Sedan & the 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback

For some folks, a compact sedan is the perfect vehicle with its emphasis on fuel economy while still supplying comfortable room for both people and merchandise. Other customers might favor an SUV but don’t desire the bulkiness and fuel consumption that come with it. This is where a compact hatchback comes in handy. The 2019 Honda Civic has both these bases covered. Along with a sedan, the Civic comes in hatchback form with an SUV’s interior versatility. The similarities and contrasts don’t end there.

Which Performance is Better?

The Civic sedan gives customers more options in this category with either a standard 2 liter 4-cylinder block generating 158 horsepower or a 1.5 liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine furnishing 174 horsepower.

With the hatchback, buyers get the 1.5 liter version but a choice of 174 horses or 180 horses via the addition of center-mounted dual exhaust pipes. Both the sedan and hatchback strongly overlap when it comes to including either a 6-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission or CVT.

Depending on the particular model, the sedan offers all four possible combinations of engine and transmission while the hatchback links either one to the 1.5 liter block. Amazingly, although there are variations in power output and control between models, fuel usage is quite similar and pleasantly stingy.

You can tune the performance of either one of these vehicles up with a service appointment. We currently offer a Honda oil change coupon and genuine Honda parts. If you're ready to enjoy Honda service, come by now.

What’s the Difference in Appearance?

Both the 2019 sedan and hatchback possess similar low, fluid profiles. Each greets the observer with long, narrow headlights bracing the familiar Honda emblem centered on the upper grille. With a honeycombed lower grille, the hatchback presents a slightly thinner nose than the sedan. Behind the four-door cabin, the hatchback displays a shorter, high rear with an overall length of 177.9 inches while the longer trunk of the sedan gives it a total length of 182.3 inches.

Inside, both Civic versions share identical front headroom and legroom at 39.3 inches and 42.3 inches respectively. It’s a similar story concerning second row clearance. Of course, the big difference is the 25.7 cubic feet of expandable storage in the hatchback that accommodates relatively tall items while the sedan offers a more traditional 15.1 cubic foot trunk.

What’s the Difference in Safety?

It would be fantastic if both the sedan and hatchback received perfect scores of 5 stars in all crash tests categories from the NHTSA and the maximum grade of Good in all categories from the IIHS.

For 2019, Honda made it happen.

This is great if accidents should occur, but there’s also the Honda Sensing suite option for most editions that includes frontal collision warnings with automatic braking and lane deviation warnings that help prevent accidents in the first place.
